Puppies!

Recently I blogged about duck hunting and everything there is to know about the sport. I recently added a new addition to my family with the purchase of a yellow lab puppy. With the joy of owning a new dog comes great responsibility. Its like a child needs to be walked, played with, fed, water, and many other things.

The first couple of nights have been really hard. I have maybe slept all of 2 hours. I first started keeping her in the box in my room hoping that it would help keep her quiet and to be inside of the house. But was I wrong, when I bought her she was quiet and kept to herself. Wow, 1230, 1,3,5, and 645 were not times I would like to be up and the other times I was begging for her to stay asleep. My parents have four dogs and I helped raise them as well but nothing like this little monstor. I bought the dog knowing it was a high drive and excited dog, I was not ready to face this. Right after spring break, getting into school, and ready to wrap up the semester did not include this little puppy I was begging to think.

But after about a week now of yelping, crying, and barking she has finally calmed down. It just took a little longer for her to settle into a pen and box than usual. Now we are napping together and she is still full of energy just at a more welcomed time for me. And sometimes she doesnt care if its 3 in the am she still wants to play. But I am looking forward to raising her and having her around for a long time. Right now is just a small bump in the road. So far she is doing great and taking to the pen very well and now that I have her on some what of a sleeping schedule everything looks great. She has the drive and energy to be a great duck dog and great friend.

I have only one question, whats a good name? its a dark yellow lab, almost a fox red in color female high energy dog. if you would like please leave me some sugguestions. thanks

  2. I think Daisy it a wonderful name for your new addition. Rob, I am so proud that you are becoming a responsible man, for someone else other than yourself! HA I hope you enjoy this new puppy. However, I have heard horror stories about how lab puppies eat and chew everything so beware. I think animals are great for humans; they keep us active and happy. I always laugh when I think of my pug she has such an amazing and high maintenance personality but hey look at her momma! HA Let me know what you end up naming her, but really Daisy is a wonderful name. O and you better get that girl in to hunting classes if she going to hang out with you!

  3. I seem to be surrounded lately with people getting new puppies--maybe it's the warm weather or something. This is probably a really exciting time for you though. Just please try to stick it out. My boss got a puppy about a month ago and had some similar issues. He ended up giving the dog away because he was so frustrated and now he regrets it. Your puppy will definitely get easier to train and deal with.

As far as names go, my mom's dogs are named Rocky and Rosie, and I've owned an Oliver. Good luck!

  4. I know EXACTLY what you mean. I have to tell you it is really hard to raise puppies. I actually raised 2 assistance dogs, both labs from eight weeks old to become service dogs at 2 years old. I was fifteen when I took care of my first one and it was HARD. It took so much out of my schedule to take care of them as well as train them to the extent of what the program wanted the dogs to know. Taking time out of your busy schedule of a student is really tough to handle too; a puppy needs to be let out every hour to start the process of house training so they don’t go at all in your house. It is really hard to raise a puppy but it is so worth knowing what your puppy’s background is that you are the one that taught it all that it needs to know. They are very loyal dogs and I couldn’t have picked a better more laid back kind of dog for anyone.
As for the name situation, definitely go for something out of the ordinary so another dog doesn’t have the same name. My dog’s names were: Judah, Yarnell, Koba, Todd, Parsley, Hayden, and Dave. The organization always came up with weird names. Good luck at picking one!

  5. My roommate and I got a dog right after Thanksgiving and he was the same way to start out with. I slept very little the first few night we had him, because he whined all night while he was in his cage. But like yours he eventually got used to his surroundings, and now he is a great dog. He is a ½ English ½ American Bulldog, and this dog always wants to play. But once they get used to where their at, and get house trained, it gets so much easier.

  6. My girlfriend wants a dog really bad but I know that they take a lot of time that her nor I can give right now. I think that one day I would love to have a dog after I have settled down in a house with some income but for now I know I can not and especially after hearing all the work you have had to go through.

  7. Camy, Marlin, Drake, Yeller, Atlas, E.Z., Puddles!

I am so excited for you Rob! You will make a great Daddy, because that is what you are to that little girl now, they are just like children!

She will be your baby, best friend, your protector, a hard worker and the best listener you have ever met. She will also be a d-good duck dog if you train her.

Write about her next time too, I can not wait to hear how the training is going. If you need me to come over and shoot some skeet so she isn't gun shy, just call.

    "BOOOOM"
    Quack Quack Quack!
    "Dead Bird Camy-Get em up"

    Happy Hunting Rob!
