The UNCW Ducks Unlimited Banquet was held on April 9th. Just wanted to say thanks for everyone who showed up and thanks for the support. To Recap if you missed this event. We had 515 in attendance and raised lots of money for the ducks. The event was a success and everyone went home happy. The dogs were given to good homes. Hopefully with our turn out and money raised UNCW Ducks Unlimited will become the new number one college chapter in the nation. This says alot for the UNCW du crowd because we are competing with State, Texas, Texas A&M, and South Carolina. Its pretty good for Wilmington and UNCW such a small school compared to the others to be a hopefully number one. We shall wait and see if the Seahawks will rank one in the nation come October.
Everyone who helped out worked extremly hard since Feburary to make this event happen and I would like to thank them. With out volunteers Ducks Unlimited would not exist.
So thank you for those who showed up and for those of you who missed this event you will have to wait until October for our 3rd Annual Oyster Roast at Hugh McRae park or the 7th Annual UNCW Ducks Unlimited Banquet will be in April of next year.

Puppies!
Recently I blogged about duck hunting and everything there is to know about the sport. I recently added a new addition to my family with the purchase of a yellow lab puppy. With the joy of owning a new dog comes great responsibility. Its like a child needs to be walked, played with, fed, water, and many other things.
The first couple of nights have been really hard. I have maybe slept all of 2 hours. I first started keeping her in the box in my room hoping that it would help keep her quiet and to be inside of the house. But was I wrong, when I bought her she was quiet and kept to herself. Wow, 1230, 1,3,5, and 645 were not times I would like to be up and the other times I was begging for her to stay asleep. My parents have four dogs and I helped raise them as well but nothing like this little monstor. I bought the dog knowing it was a high drive and excited dog, I was not ready to face this. Right after spring break, getting into school, and ready to wrap up the semester did not include this little puppy I was begging to think.
But after about a week now of yelping, crying, and barking she has finally calmed down. It just took a little longer for her to settle into a pen and box than usual. Now we are napping together and she is still full of energy just at a more welcomed time for me. And sometimes she doesnt care if its 3 in the am she still wants to play. But I am looking forward to raising her and having her around for a long time. Right now is just a small bump in the road. So far she is doing great and taking to the pen very well and now that I have her on some what of a sleeping schedule everything looks great. She has the drive and energy to be a great duck dog and great friend.
I have only one question, whats a good name? its a dark yellow lab, almost a fox red in color female high energy dog. if you would like please leave me some sugguestions. thanks

Ducks Unlimited
As you know i have a passion for waterfowling and everything that waterfowling has to offer me. I feel that its important to fully understand the importance and meaning behind waterfowling. In order to keep this passion and the sport alive, like everything giving back seems to be a huge ordeal. While we are out there hunting ducks and enjoying the wetlands we must also be consious of any damage we are causing to the wetlands. Ducks Unlimited was created back in the 1920's under the CCC during the great depression. It was a way to conserve wetlands and manage them specifically for duck hunting and the duck population. Ducks Unlimited is a non profit organziation that spends .83 cents on the dollar to preserve and protect wetlands. I feel that its important to give back to something that you love. Conservation is very important especially with the development and destruction of the praire lands. Ducks Unlimited has been on the leading edge of concervation and the research in the destruction of the grounds. Ducks Unlimited puts on events and banquets throughout the country and the year that raise funds and help the organization.
Not only do i attend these events I myself donate my time and effort to help out DU. Here at UNCW I am VP of DU. We put on 2 events each year, an oyster roast and banquet. We have only been a chapter for 6 years and we have risen to 4th in the nation and looing to take the 1st spot after our banquet on April 9th. We have had over 500 for each of our events this year and looking forward to April 9th.
With that said remember its always important to give back and help promote what you love and believe in.

Whistling Wings
After my first post you know that I love duck hunting. Taking a boat ride at 430 am does not sound fun to most. Nor does sitting in the rain, sleet or snow for hours waiting to shoot a duck doesn’t appeal to most. Breaking ice before shooting light for 3 hours to make a hole in the iced over ponds waiting for shooting light doesn’t appeal to many people. Duck hunters live for the freezing cold, sleet, snow and terrible weather just to wait for the ducks. November to January is the only time duck hunters reveal their craziness. Boat rides and trips out of town to Arkansas or Canada just in pursuit of the waterfowl they love. Chasing the many species of waterfowl all round the country seems crazy to most. But the reward of shooting ducks outweighs the cold, miserable, and awful weather that we all experience. Yes duck hunters a little loopy in the head, just chasing their preferred species.
Most people look at camouflage and think what rednecks, white trash, and just strange. The various looks that you receive wearing camouflage is hilarious, people perceive you as not as intelligent or dumb, which is great fun. Many hunters might be rednecks, but for the most part duck hunters aren’t in general rednecks or white trash at all. Even other hunters judge a duck hunter. Calling them the rich hunters or even not hunters at all. Which is fine by the duck hunters, they honestly don’t want to run into hardcore deer hunters at the boat ramp trying to find a hole to attempt shooting at a duck.
What really attracts me to duck hunting is seeing the rising of the sun over the treetops. Hearing the sounds of another cold January morning wake up is something that everyone needs to experience. Not only do you get to hear the world wake up, there is a peaceful beginning to your day. Then around 6 your decoys are set and boat is in position to wait for the morning flight. Then you feel it your heart races and adrenaline starts to pump, the ducks are up. There is nothing like hearing the whistling wings of wood ducks in the swamp or flying through the river. Just hearing to the ducks whistle through the cypress trees and drop feet down into your decoys is a special experience. The shot gunning is just a bonus, being out there experiencing the sights, sounds, and over all experience of water fowling is great.
With all that being said who wouldn’t want to start duck hunting. Its not all about shooting ducks and hanging around the boat after a great hunt. It’s a great experience and heritage for more many people. Duck hunting has been in my family for years and I plan on keeping it in the family for years to come. Its something that I enjoy and look forward to every year. We spend all year gearing up and talking about spots we would like to hunt, but like I said it not everything about duck hunting. I have seen many things from hunting that I would have missed if I wouldn’t hunt. The memories that I have and the pictures that I have taken with friends and family make me who I am today. And I have the whistling wings to thank for that.

Little Part of Life
So writing my first blog. Just wanted to say I am originally from Wilmington and a senior at uncw. I enjoy hunting, boating and just being outdoors. I am a part of uncw ducks unlimited and have really enjoyed that in my four years at uncw. Something special about me, I had open heart surgery last May. I needed major work done in my heart. This was something that was very stressful and I will remember this and life with it forever. Besides that you can find me in the duck blind, boat, and in the woods.
